The first 145 pages is a diary of his travels and there are few dates in this diary that can help in placing Marryat and events. The remaining pages of "Remarks, &c. &c." are essays of Marryat's criticisms of American culture and society such as language, slavery, religion, lynch law, education and others.

This book is a pirated copy from the Philadelphia multi-volume edition issued the in 1839, when foreign author copyrights were not enforced.
