Near Fine/Very Good. , California Centennial Classic [8.25x5.5in]; xxiii, [1], 192 pp. [1], frontispiece map of northern gold mining counties; Dark brown cloth with gilt lettering on spine; Pale yellow dust jacket with pale blue map illustration on front, brown lettering on front and spine, brown lettering and illustration on back; Gilt spine lettering soiled and darkened; Dust jacket darken with age and darker spine, shelf wear to edges, with closed tear top and small chips at bottom of spine. Overall in very good condition. [Kurutz 114c]. Oscar Lewis introduces this edition of the diaries pulbished by the author in 1906. These are the recollections of Lewis Hanchett, a 49nr', and Canfield's research. Lewis comments that this book "... has remained among the most entertaining of the many narratives picturing mining camp life during the heyday of the Gold Rush. A skillful blending of fact and fiction, it presents an admittedly romanticized view of the great adventure... ".
