About This Item
San Francisco: North Point Press, 1988. Trade Paperback. Very Good. 5 1/2" x 8. 252 pages. Originally published in 1966, this book has been recognized as a classic case study as well as a daringly compassionate portrait of a man consumed by self-loathing. Author's third novel, originallly published in 1966 it is a study of a mind turning on itself., probing its dark recesses and inner limits and finally exploding in horror, rage and madness. Earl Summerfield is an obscure petty civil servant whose work for the State Employment Bureau in San Francisco is a dreary mixture of maddening bureaucracy and water-cooler politics. His marriage has drifted into indifference and hatred. His diary starkly records the fluctuating contempt for others and apologetic self-hatred of inward retreat. He becomes obcessed with Mara St. John, a young beauty queen and socialite. Slowly his dark fantasies take shape in action as he follows women in the street, brushes against them in elevators, prowls backyards, and finally stalks Mara with diabolical concentration. A deeply disturbing harrowing study of a diseased mind.
