About This Item
This is an early copy of "DICTIONARY OF AMERICANISMS" - A Glossary of Words and Phrases Usually Regarded as Peculiar to the United States by John Russell Bartlett. 1859 2nd edition; Little, Brown and Company; Boston. The compiles the "colloquial language of the United States" and is a record of the way many 19th-century Americans actually spoke.
Condition:
Soiling/staining to the covers; the gilt lettering on the spine has partially faded; there are a couple small cloth tears at the top and bottom edges of the spine; cloth tears at the corners. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. A light stain appears at the outer page edges starting with with the title page up to about page xxiv (one of the Introduction pages). The front end paper has a thin, 1.5" strip at the top-right corner that has torn away. 1.5" x 1" label affixed to the top-left corner of the front pastedown. The last 10 pages or so at the end of the book have a light stain along the length of the outer edge. No writing found.
