About This Item

Augsburg, Johann Christian Leopold, n. d. (c. 1730). With 2 engr. richly figured titles and altogether 500 engraved images on 166 plates, and 1 engr. plate "Hieroglyphisches Beschluss-Gedicht", partly in the orig. handcoloring. 8 leaves incl. printed title; 2nd printed title, 8 leaves, 1 leaf explanations to the "Hieroglyphisches Beschluss-Gedicht". Oblong-quarto. Modern half calf with old brocade pastedowns and flyleaves, spine gilt. In slipcase. Augsburg, Johann Christian Leopold, n. d. (c. 1730). A popular collection of rebus-like and emblematic illustrations of Biblical quotations, by Melchior Mattsperger (1627-1698), merchant and mayor of Augsburg, here in a new edition by Johann Christian Leopold, conceived also with regard to children. The work was initially published in 1687 and 1699. The present copy is complete with both engraved titles sometimes lacking. Each image is headed by book, chapter, and verse numbers, followed by the verse itself which always includes one or two words represented as rebus. Below the image is an engraved two-line rhymed explanation. 59 plates in part I and one plate in part II are handcolored. - Some thumb-staining to margins, a few brown stains, images mostly unaffected. - Faber du Faur I, 690 (ed. 1717).
