The original owner of this set was the celebrated American physician Ernst Philip Boas (1891- 1955), son of the German scientist Frans Boas, regarded by many as the father of modern anthropology. Ernst Boas served as medical director of several leading hospitals of New York City, including Mt. Sinai, and was Professor of Cardiology at Columbia University. 8vo. - Erster Band: frontispiece plate,xii,543 pp., plus 33,(1) pp. of publisher's catalogue; Zweiter Band: (2),x,756 pp.; Dritter Band, Erste Halfte: frontispiece plate,(2),496 pp. - ALL PUBLISHED. - With altogether 243 woodcut text illustrations. - Partially unopened. - 3/4 leather, spine with 5 bands and title in gilt. (Minor chipping, some covers are detached, else fine; interior very fine.) - All volumes with engraved bookplate of Ernst P. Boas. - The most ambitious and most famous work (Garrison-Morton 2617) of Virchow (1821-1902); though not completed as initionally planned (only 25 of the projected 30 lectures were given).
