German-language art history classic in fine condition; 4to; 568 p., immaculate and unmarked--not ex-lib., no former owner's name; frontis. full-color reproduction of Sixtus IV Appointing Platina as Librarian of the Vatican Library; photoportrait of the author and many fine reproductions follow, many with tissue guards, and fold-out map of Renaissance Florence; paper of finest quality, strong and white--only last page of index and end pages show foxing. Binding is firm; ornage boards are unfaded, though scuffed at upper edge of back; spine has beautiful and still bright gilt ornamentation within gilt bands, and bright gilt lettering on black patch. Front board has bright gilt lettering and monogram, slightly marred by a few tiny dark stains.
