About This Item

The Detective Book Club produced volumes of three crime novels from 1942 to 1999. Originally monthly, near the end they dwindled down to just a few per year. Many famous detective and crime novelists had their early works featured in DBC editions. Often, books were published in DBC editions before, or at the same time as they were published in mass market form. A little about our authors:

Elizabeth Peters: A pseudonym used by Barbara Mertz, as Peters she is best known for her Amelia Peabody series, featuring a family of archaeologists exploring Egyptian tombs. Mertz held a PhD in Egyptology. In addition to the 20 Peabody novels, Mertz, as Peters, wrote six Vicky Bliss novels, four Jacqueline Kirby novels and nine stand alone novelss. Mertz died in 2013. This is Jacqueline Kirby book three of four.

Hugh Pentecost: A pen name of Judson Philips, a man of many detectives. Under both names, Philips published over 100 books, most of which were in one of eight different series. The largest series featured Pierre Chambrun with 23 books. In spite of all these series, almost a quarter of his books were stand-alone novels. This is Julian Quist novel #14 of 16.

Anne Morice: Morice wrote 25 mysteries, 23 in her Tessa Crichton series, and two in her Tubby Wiseman series, which ended with her death in 1989. This is Tessa Crichton novel number ninteen.

Synopsis

The annual Historical Romance Writers of the World convention in New York City is calling to Jacqueline Kirby, a Nebraska librarian who desperately desires some excitement. But all is not love and kisses at this august gathering of starry-eyed eccentrics and sentimental scribes. As far as Jacqueline is concerned, the sudden "natural" death of a gossip columnist seems anything but. And when she's approached by a popular genre star who fears for her own life, the resourceful Ms. Kirby quickly goes back to work...as a sleuth. Because there's a sinister scenario being penned at this purple prose congregation. And when jealousy and passion are given free rein beyond the boundaries of the printed page, the result can be murder.
