About This Item
New Jersey: The Ecco Press, 1992. Stated First Edition There is a 1993 hardcover edition from a different publisher; it's not the First Edition 8vo size hardcover with color photo illustrated dust jacket; 77 pages with some a section of Joseph Cornell's photographs on black and white glossy stock. From jacket: "The task (the author) undertakes in this diverse, essentially unclassifiable book is one illumination and tribute. Rather than constrict his response to Joseph Cornell's surreal art to the objective terms of critical analysis, (he) sets out to recreate in a different medium - the written language of the poet - the experience of viewing Cornell's enigmatic constructions of boxes, collages, and film. Partly an appreciation of Cornell's work, partly an appropriation of his method, (this volume) interweaves elements of art history, poetry, and biography in a series of short texts that crate a kind of poetic equivalent to Cornell's visual arts. THe artist's premise that the world is beautiful, but not sayable becomes (the author's) as well." About 15 or so pages previously had a paperclip on the top of the page. The paperclips are long gone, but the impressions remain, including on some abutting pages. Teeny rust marks from the paperclips are also on a few pages. Top of jacket at spine is slightly bumped.
