About This Item

London: Methuen & Co Ltd, 1958. First British Edition. Cloth. Fine/Near Fine. Small 8vo (7 1/2" x 5 1/8"), light red cloth with silver lettering on spine, pictorial cloth with red-black-white design (price-clipped) by Harry More-Garden, archival mylar-protected, 98 pages. Jean Anouilh [pron.: An-ouil or A-nouil & not "anwi"] (1910 - 1987) was a prominent French playwrite and screenwriter whose work ranged from sophisticated drama to absurdist farce. He is well known for Antigone (1944)--based on Sophocles' drama--which attacked the Nazified Vichy government. One of France's most prolific and important dramatists, his themes often dealt with renouncing reality for dreams, and maintaining integrity in a world of moral compromise. Premier in England (London & Oxford) in 1957. SUPERIOR CONDITION: tight, bright, clean copy in a bright beautifully designed dj (price-clipped) with light soil and some edge chipping. Previous owner's name on front pastedown.
