About This Item

New York: [printed by] A. Penfield, 1865. Unfolded booklet (13 x 22.5 cm.), [6] pages (if folded). John B. Barlett's business was located at 69 Murray Street, New York, where he distributed the Squire's Patent Fruit Jar. "The GREAT SECRET in preserving fruit lies in thoroughly expelling the oxygen, and safely sealing therefrom". The Squire's Jars used a combination rubber band and cork to achieve this. The cover illustration depicts a young woman in the process of canning, with a steaming pot on the stove in the background, and shelves of finished product in the background, implying the efficiency of this method, which she is employing. Discoloration of one edge of the leaf, effecting the illustration; otherwise very good. [OCLC locates one copy in an unnamed collection of culinary ephemera; otherwise not located].
