The geographic setting is not specifically identified, but references to Vermont likely indicate somewhere in New England. A thoroughly American work, with reference made to Uncle Sam, Thomas Jefferson, the American language, and the ongoing Civil War ("this little family quarrel we’re havin’.") Lorraine Hansberry's tour de force was the first Broadway play produced to be written by a Black woman. A Raisin in the Sun explores the dynamics of a Black family in America as they confront prejudice and the profound barriers due to racism in all aspects of their daily lives. Before its debut, Hansberry worked as a Black civil rights activist and journalist for Black papers, and is now known to have been a closeted lesbian, leading to intense isolation even after she was catapulted into fame.
The play debuted at The Ethel Barrymore Theatre in 1958 and the book was published the following year, it includes photographs of the original production, and therefore documents a crucial moment in the history of performance arts.

Evaristo Gherardi was a 17th-century Italian actor who is best known for his acting and playwright career in France in the 1670s. He edited and collected several scenes from various plays from Italian theater which were performed in French – most of which are from the Commedia dell'Arte. Note the engraving of a burlesque harlequin as the frontispiece of his 1695 edition.

George Gordon Byron, more commonly known as Lord Byron, was an English poet and a prominent figure in the Romantic movement. He has always been regarded as one of Britain's greatest poets. His play 'Werner', or 'The Inheritance'
was his attempt to transform theater at the time. 'Werner' was an adaptation of Harriet Lee's "Kruitzner" though it was poorly received at the time and has not gained much following since.
This 1823 English edition was published in London by Murray.

Terence was a 2nd-century BC Roman playwright who is most remembered for his comedies. His six plays, which all survive, were composed after he was freed from slavery.
