[Manchester, N.H.: S.C. & L.M. Gould, 1892. Second edition, one of 75 copies. 16 pp. 1 vols. 4to. Printed wrappers, with loosely inserted card "From S. C. Gould, Manchester, N.H.". Fine, cloth folding box. Second edition, one of 75 copies. 16 pp. 1 vols. 4to. Business and Diversion Inoffensive to God. The first book on fishing printed in America, the sermon preached by Joseph Seccombe (1706-1760), here reprinted (with his name spelled Secombe) for the first time since the original publication in Boston, 1743, with a page of notes on the historical background of Seccombe's sermon and its connections to Manchester, N.H., and the derivation of the name Ammauskeeg-Falls.

Of particular interest is the remark by the editor, "Copies of the printed discourse have become very scarce, only five perfect ones being known to exist. It has been thought advisable to reprint the same that it may be preserved." The text was also included in Miscellaneous Notes and Queries. Vol. X, no. 2, August 1892, issued by the same publisher (and advertised on the back wrapper). Phillips p. 338; Bibliotheca Salmo Salar 212. For first ed.: Evans 5285; Gee, pp. 36-38; Henderson, p. 219; Bruns S105; Heller 2:487

Description:
Published by Barre Publishers, 1971. 1st edition.. Hardback. Very Good. Illustrated by McCurdy, Michael. Very good condition with no wrapper. The annual fishing party at Amoskeag to which the gay and gorgeous aristocrats flocked was only, through geographical accident, the most famous of this type of gathering. And the man who reported it for us had the worst case of social inferiority in his generation, which gives this tract an odd slant. Brown leather spine, patterned boards. 43 numbered pages. Illustrated with wood engravings. Signed Limited Edition. Wear to spine, most at base. An odd grubby mark to contents. Limited edition page has been signed by Illustrator but not numbered. Contained in original slipcase which is edge worn with a few marks. Surface paper damage to spine part of label.
