About This Item

London: Longmans, Green & Co, 1894. HEAVY. 2 volumes. xx, 435; xii, 397pp; index, appendix, glossary, 179 ills, 5 coloured maps (2 very large folding maps), errata. Or brown cloth with pictorial gilt vignette to front, gilt titles and antelope head vignette to spine. Some minor shelf wear (rubbing) at head and foot of spine, and corners; chip at topof spine on one volume; light rubbing to spine edges. Surface insect damage (silverfish) to spines, small chip to cloth surface (approx 8mm) above antelope on spine of Volume 1. The large folding maps have some linen reinforcing to verso near spine and along some folds but are complete and clean. Sporadic light to moderate foxing throughout but generally very clean tight copies with strong intact hinges. Scarce first English language edition of this important African exploration covering much of Equatorial East Africa including Zanzibar and Kenya, with visits to Kilimanjaro, time with Masai etc. The expedition was responsible for the discovery of Lakes Rudolf and Stefanie. In common with most African exporation books of the time there is copious material on hunting, indeed it seems to have been an obsession with massive numbers of animals killed and recorded.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Very Good. Royal 8vo..
