Woodcut headpiece and initial. In good to very good condition. (10 ll.), 48 pp. A-H4, I2. *** FIRST EDITION. Discusses the relationship between art and nature, and argues that scientists should know art, as well as artists know nature. A second edition appeared at Lisbon, 1818.Machado de Castro (1731-1822) was one of Portugal's foremost sculptors; he was responsible for the equestrian statue of D. José I (erected in the Praça do Commercio in 1775), which remains one of Lisbon's most notable monuments. He wrote extensively on his works and the theory behind them, including a full-length discussion of the statue of D. José I entitled Descripção analytica da execução da estatua equestre, Lisbon, 1810.*** Innocêncio IV, 125: without collation; mentions a reprint of Lisbon, 1818.
