Macauley has written a full page inscription telling of his reasons for writing the novel stating it as one of the first 'academic novels' and mentioning 2 others of his friends 'Pictures from an Institution' and 'The Groves of Academe' by Randall Jarrell and Mary McCarthy. Mcaulay had a successful career as an editor at Houghton Mifflin.
