Bruxelles: Johannis Mommartius, 1656 A good copy of the second edition of this extremely rare work. First printed in Venice in 1652. Baldassare Bonifacio was a professor among many other talents and this work is a cabinet of curiosities - gathering a wide range of stories and recollections - including tales from classical antiquity of women who had serpent lovers. In full leather binding with raised bands and gilt decoration to the spine and tooling to the boards. It has had an old leather repair relaying the tooled front board onto plain leather. It is clean, showing wear to top and bottom of spine and edges and with a broken front hinge and weak rear hinge, although the board is still attached. The contents are in superb condition given the age of the book. There is a biographical note written in ink in english on a preliminary and 2-3 signs of previous ownershiip. Schoonebeck (a student of Romeyn de Hooghe). The illustrated title displays a series of images depicting Paradise and the fall of man. The main title is printed in red and black and contains a woodcut device with a Jesuit Christogram. Bound in full modern dark brown bonded leather with a French groove. The interior pages are generally clean and crisp and the plates are well executed with a sharp impression. The illustrated title and the main title are mildly age-toned; a tiny chip on the upper margin of the illustrated title is neatly patched. Two leaves (S6-7) contain an area of chipping on the bottom margin edge (probably a manufacturing flaw). Part 1 - iv, 136p. first iv pages loosely inserted and on a larger size paper than the rest of the volume, they are creased and chipped to the edges. Part 2 - [iv], 124p this seems to lack iv pages at the start in comparison with the copy described by Holzenberg. The two parts bound together in original very worn quarter morocco. Signs of a bookplate having been removed from the front pastedown. Front free end paper detached and with some abrasions. Together with a volume of plates in the Middle HIll boards, the plates for part 1 loosely inserted, those for part 2 bound in. Some browning and spotting. 26 plates. Holzenberg 249 which refers to both vols. Part 2 and the plates are more difficult to find than part 1.

A beautiful copy of the 1975 Weiser edition. Dr Moses Gaster possessed the original text which was potentially a 13th/14th century source (possibly earlier). This was a Hebrew book of magic, the text of which Gaster first published, along with translation and commentary in 1896. His English translation here is followed by the original Hebrew text. Gaster's original document is now in the British Library. This is the third impression from 1975, published by Weiser. Pages are remarkably clean and bright, not a single apparent mark, crease, inscription, tanning or foxing. If anything the top edges have the slightest of age wear. Boards are tight and clean. The very slightest fraying at the base of the spine and a miniscule amount of bending in the bottom corners. But all in all a remarkable copy. Please see all photos, which are of the actual copy for sale. This book is rare in any condition but exceedingly so in this state. No DJ, as published
