About This Item
Conservative, biblical, and scholarly commentaries on the Old Testament book of The Judges are rare. Purchase this classic!
First published in 1975 by Zondervan, Distressing Days of the Judges, discusses the extremely important period of time between the death of Joshua and the beginning of Israel's monarchy. Individual judges, including Eli and Samuel, whom we read about in First Samuel, and others are discussed in detail. Although not a commentary per se, you will want to put it on your shelf with your other commentaries for its rich content. A vast majority of the book is spent in the Old Testament book of Judges. The book is divided into two major sections. The first section deals with general information before and during the period of the judges—questions of a general nature. They concern matters of identification, the rationale for the period and the way it is reported, the potential which the period held for blessing, the nature of the world of the day, the character of the nations which brought oppression, the marked blessings of the time when Joshua lived, and the variety and seriousness of sin that arose. The most interesting of this material is the detailed information of the time leading up to the judges as Dr. Wood does an excellent job discussing the "cycles" that occurred in the conquering of the Promised Land the years following. The second section deals with the judges individually. The second part probes particular matters which concern the distinct episodes that transpired. Discussion centers on the leading people of the day, who were mainly judges, with special attention given to the story involved. Each judge's family, work, conquests (if he or she had such), spirituality, and other matters are discussed. The "minor judges" are lumped together, yet there is still information that can be learned about these men who only have 2-3 verses written about them in the Bible.
Each chapter contains several sections about the life and work of the judge. Bible students will find a wealth of material about each one, including many of the minor judges. If you teach a Bible class and are planning teaching about the judges, this book is easily read, yet packed with well researched material.
