New York: July 1st, 1825.. 1825.. Good. - Check, 4-1/8 inches high by 6-1/4 inches wide, paid to Arthur Burtis, "Super' Alms House & Officers". Signed by the mayor "Wm. Paulding, Jr." and by 2 others. Endorsed by the payee on the verso "Arthur Burtis" & with a perforated cancellation stamp. The left side of the check is a bit darkened with the top left corner creased & a small piece out of the bottom left corner. <p>William Paulding, Jr. [1770-1854] studied law, was admitted to the bar and began practice in New York. He was elected as a Democratic-Republican to the 12th Congress, holding office from 1811-1813. He served in the War of 1812 and was a delegate to the New York constitutional convention of 1821. He was adjutant general of the State of New York and, from 1824-1826, Mayor of New York City.
