About This Item
4to, cloth, illustrated, 536, 711, 748, 700 pp. Some chips and tears to the spines, mostly volumes 1 & 2, spine gilt lettering a little faded, some edgewear and foxing, tear to large folding map (map still in very good shape), some dampstaining, mostly to volume one; despite mentioned faults, this is remains an attractive set.Edmund Bailey O'Callaghan (1797-1880) was born in Ireland, but immigrated to Canada in 1823. He was a doctor and journalist by training, but was also politically active, and left Canada after participating in some activities in Montréal, which ended in a riot. He would practice medicine after moving to Albany, but would also become the secretary-archivist for the state of New York. This work is a richly illustrated history of New York during the colonial period. Illustrations include some folding maps, engravings and charts. Howes indicates that there are 78 maps and plates in these volumes. There is also a good deal of information on the Native Americans in New York, especially the Iroquois, and documentation on the Dutch period. Howes B16. Dictionary of Canadian Biography Online.
