First edition of Thoreau's third book, published posthumously and equipped with a preliminary 33 page biographical sketch by Ralph Waldo Emerson. BAL records the edition consisted of 1558 copies. Full dark blue levant morocco bindings with fancy gilt turn ins, full bright gilt edges, decorative spine with gilt lozenge design, red leather labels in compartments between raised bands and bound by Holloway. Bookplate on endpaper. Minor brown blemishes to the colour plates and on the pages opposite. Wear to the joints on v.2, front joint is cracked down to the first compartment, otherwise are tender, covers are lightly rubbed with scattered dark blemishes and minor wear to the gilt edges, top corners on both volumes are slightly chipped and bumped. Otherwise both volumes are both firmly bound and in very good condition. 504 & 643 pp. .

An attractive, didactic children's book very probably written in 1844 by the Swiss (Geneva) wife of the "co-author", a Protestant Pasteur -Pasteur de l'église réformée evangelique- telling the story of a boat trip up the Rhône river, from Avignon to Geneva. viii + 203 pp. The unusual cover page is composed of a series of vignettes.Free postal delivery worldwide.

London: Osgood, McIlvaine & Co., 1894. First edition. Hardcover. Good +. 8vo, complete in 3 volumes. Original tan cloth boards with blue - green titles and decoration on front. Corners bumped and some minor edge wear. Some cracking of inner hinges, slightly cocked. Generally good + and nice & clean inside. This was published in lower numbers than the more common illustrated edition. Stated fourth edition inside, but this publisher (like others in Victorian Britain) often stamped later edition numbers on books to make it seem like the books were in high demand and selling out quickly. Wildly popular in Victorian times, the novel that introduced Svengali to the popular consciousness. Scarce.
