About This Item

John Dicks. Hardcover. Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Meissenbach. Originally published as a cheap edition in paper wraps in two parts in the mid to late 1800's. These have been bound together at some stage in a library style plain green buckram with gilt title to spine. The original paper covers being discarded in the binding process. Both Part I & II are each embellished with 12 engravings by Meissenbach. In good to very good condition plain green 'library' style buckram (but not ex Library) with some handling marks. End papers clean. A few large brown marks affect the title page of Part I and and continue for the first few pages otherwise the pages are very clean and clear. The pages to Part II may be of a lower grade paper as these are quite faded. Both Parts are printed on thin paper commonly used in cheap paper editions and the text is set in a double column format. I have found only one other example of this edition and that remains in the original paper covers.

Synopsis

[*From Wikipedia:*][1] Alonso Quixano, a retired country gentleman in his fifties, lives in an unnamed section of La Mancha with his niece and a housekeeper. He has become obsessed with books of chivalry, and believes their every word to be true, despite the fact that many of the events in them are clearly impossible. Quixano eventually appears to other people to have lost his mind from little sleep and food and because of so much reading. [1]: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Quixote
