Large folding map, 3 plans. 2 portraits, several engravings. 407pp. 12mo, original brown cloth, spine rebacked in modern brown cloth retaining a portion of the original spine with the title, moderate foxing throughout, mostly to margins, light wear to some cloth edges, a few pages with pencil marks to margins, foxing to the plan of Santa Fe, two contemporary plates, not from the book, are mounted on the endpapers. Cincinnati: J. A. & U. P. James, 1848.<br/><br/> "Doniphan's Expedition, recounting the adventures of the First Regiment of Missouri Cavalry in New Mexico and Chiahuahua." Wagner- Camp 134:3. "The author was an eyewitness of, and an actor in, many of the scenes which he describes." Eberstadt 105:132. "Doniphan and Kearney's conquests gave the United States its claim to New Mexico and Arizona, finally acquired by the Gadsden Purchase." Howes H-769. The large folding map of Mexico, the Western United States from Texas to California and north to Oregon has several small tears to the center fold without loss of text. The map does not have any foxing. The Frontispiece of Sterling Price is bound in near the end. The edition is considered the best edition by Wright Howes.<br/><br/>
