London: Hamish Hamilton,, 1961. The dedication copy First edition, first impression, the dedication copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "Tony [Jacobs], from Julian (J. Maclaren-Ross), 7-4-61." The recipient is identified by another hand as Anthony Jacobs, the actor. Jacobs is mentioned in the dedication, which reads to "R. D. Smith, Anthony Jacobs, and all those who on Sound Radio, helped to bring these characters to life." Jacobs's first radio lead was in Maclaren-Ross's radio play Captain Kidd, in 1946. The year prior to this book's publication, Jacobs had also taken the lead role in Maclaren-Ross's radio play Dream Man. Octavo. Original red boards, title to spine in gilt. With dust jacket. Boards gently bowed, a few minor spots to top edge; an excellent copy in the bright jacket.
