About This Item

New York: Morrow, 1989. First Edition. Signed by the author / actor / photographer Roddy McDowall to fellow actor Robert Mitchum. Inscribed on the title page: “Thank you dear Bob, R.” Also signed beneath his printed name on the same page, “Roddy McDowall.” Robert Mitchum has contributed a commentary to the book on the director Henry Hathaway. McDowall’s photograph of Hathaway was taken in Durango, Mexico in 1968, and shows him standing in a graveyard with a huge tree in the background and a plain casket just behind him, apparently on the set of the 1968 film directed by Hathaway, 5 Card Stud, starring Robert Mtichum, Dean Martin, Inger Stevens, and Roddy McDowall. Mitchum begins his commentary on Hathaway this way: “There were giants in those times; men of spectacular individuality, fiercely masculine, whose seamless armor shielded a depth of feeling and sensitive appreciation that could be seen only in the tapestry revealed in the products of their creativity. Vic Fleming, Woody Van Dyke, ‘Wild Bill’ Wellman, Raoul Walsh, and Henry Hathaway.” Some of Henry Hathaway’s extensive body of work include such great Western films as How the West Was Won (1962), The Sons of Katie Elder (1965), and T True Grit (1969). Take Two is the second of the four part series ‘Double Exposure’ of photographs by Roddy McDowall. Oversize art book, 272 pages. Hint of shelf wear, else a fine copy in a near fine bright dust jacket with two 1/3” tears to the top edge of the spine and a trace of fading to the spine. Roddy McDowall (1928 - 1998) appeared in his first film, Murder in the Family (1938), at age ten, and went on to a very successful career in such classic films as John Ford's How Green Was My Valley (1941), acting alongside Walter Pidgeon, Maureen O'Hara and Donald Crisp, My Friend Flicka (1943) and Lassie Come Home (1943), eventually appearing on the Broadway stage and, later, on television. He also developed an extensive collection of movies and Hollywood memorabilia. Robert Mitchum (1917 - 1997) was a sleepy-eyed, effortlessly handsome leading man, best known for his work in classic dramas, including film noir, westerns, and war films. Some of his best known films are The Night of the Hunter (directed by Charles Laughton), Out of the Past, Foreign Intrigue, Cape Fear, Farewell My Lovely and The Big Sleep (as private eye Philip Marlowe), El Dorado, The Longest Day, Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo, The Red Pony, Angel Face, Heaven Knows Mr. Allison, The Sundowners, The Grass is Greener, Two for the Seesaw, Mister Moses, Ryan’s Daughter, That Championship Season, The Friends of Eddie Coyle, The Yakuza, and Midway. His later career included a starring role in two big-budget Herman Wouk World War II television mini-series, The Winds of War (1983) and War and Remembrance (1988). Remarkably, his only Oscar nomination came for Best Supporting Actor from his role as Lt. Walker in the 1945 film Story of G.I. Joe, directed by William Wellman, based on the books Brave Men and Here Is Your War by Ernie Pyle. Robert and Dorothy Mitchum were married for 57 years and lived together in Santa Barbara, CA. Dorothy passed away in April, 2014 at the age of 94. Their sons James Mitchum and Christopher Mitchum are actors, as is their grandson Bentley Mitchum. Robert Mitchum’s last film was the television biopic James Dean: Race with Destiny (1997) playing Giant director George Stevens.
