Synopsis

The title of Buchi Emecheta's novel refers to the "Double Yoke" of modernity and tradition in modern Nigeria. The story tells of two college students who are confronting the demands of tradition versus changing culture. Nko, a female student, is struggling to achieve independence and education in a world stacked against her. Ete Kamba loves Nko, but finds himself struggling against the rigid tradition that dictate Nko's place in their society.
