The author was a friend of Richard Brautigan for 18 years. When Richard Brautigan committed suicide the author decided to write this book in hopes of presenting a more positive view of his friend. For, as Raymond Carver is quoted on the rear panel blurb, the book is "... Truly the best thing of ever seen written on the man. You right of him with love and affection, that's obvious, but also with a deep and clear understanding. It's really quite good ... and a cautionary tale as well."
