About This Item
Glasgow: Published by W. Falconer, 1814. Platemark: 5;⅞ x 3¾ inches. Sheet size: 7¼ x 4¼. Mounting trace remnant to verso and light soil.
Engraving by R. Gray ("R. Gray Sculpt.") of a bust portrait of Benjamin Franklin shown wearing his fur cap. Other variations of this image show a bolt of lightning in the sky behind him, but not this one. The image is based on the medallion by Jean Bapitste Nini (1717-1786), a commission he received from Jacques Donatien Le Ray de Chaumont (1726-1803) in whose house at Passy Franklin lived.
