About This Item

UK.WELLINGBOROUGH,NORTHANTS.AIRWAIR,1999.UK,Qrto HB+dw/dj, 1st edn.NMINT/NMINT.Colour photographic dw/dj.Black paper-covered boards,no letters and black endpapers.Rectangular Qrto, approx 10.25" tall x 9.50" wide;profusely illustrated with b/w+colour photographs; unpaginated but 112pp with foreword by John Peel. It is,indeed,a strange story.Dr Martens have almost inadvertently attained a status and cultural significance that could never have been forseen back in April,1960.Almost from the outset,DM's have won a diverse allegiance from an incredible array of subcultures. With each shift in youth fashion and thinking, new generations have moulded the shoe and recycled it for their own ends, each time injecting it with new subcultural potency which in turn has been mimicked by the next generation, heaping yet more heritage on its simple shape. The original 1460 is clearly a modern design classic.Internationally there are only a handful of designs that can boast similar status.Ray Bans,Levis, the VW Beetle,Zippo lighters,Marlborough cigarettes, the black leather jacket. In Britiain, the list is far smaller. The Mini motorcar.Fred Perrys. It is a select few. What once was a bulbous and plain workwear boot is now a good-looking subcultural essential. It has become the perfect integration of both form and fashion.Dr Martens are one of the oddest fashion trends of all time. They fit with boiler suits, combats, pinstripes, bondage trousers or flowery dresses. They will probably be around as long as people have feet. They have always annoyed your parents. They remain the only boot of its kind on the market.Like the subcultures that created them, they are scruffy, smart, sexy, macho, fashionable, fashionless, classy, classless, uniform, unique. They are Dr Martens.
