About This Item

Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston, 1955. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Near Fine Condition/Very Good. Illustrator: Lynd Ward. Book A first edition (same date on title page and copyright notice) of the third book in Dawson's time travel series. Illustrated by Lynd Ward, described by the Royal Academy of Arts as an “American artist and storyteller, known for his series of wordless novels using wood engraving, and his illustrations for juvenile and adult books.” Recently Ward has been rediscovered, given the title of “Father of the Graphic Novel” by The Atlantic magazine in recognition that, quoting the RAA again, his “wordless novels influenced the development of the graphic novel.” This book includes a provenance card stating it is from the collection of Lynd Ward’s long-time friend Dan Burne Jones. Jones was a fellow artist whose own work was influenced by Ward and Rockwell Kent. He built a collection of Ward-illustrated books for the creation of a bibliography (apparently unpublished but in a collection of Ward material in the Penn State archives). A collection of papers about Ward and Kent written and gathered by Jones is held by the Smithsonian Institution. Size: Octavo (8-9"). 282 pages. Item Type: Book. Text block is tight, bright and unmarked. Near fine hardback bound in black cloth over boards with a red dragon drawing on the front cover and title in red on the spine. Minimal rubbing of the bottom corners and a bit of shelf wear at the head and foot of the spine. The unclipped ($2.75) dust jacket is in Very Good+ condition. The main wear is at the head and foot of the spine, with a 1/4" tear at the front fold of the foot and a smaller tear at the head. There is some surface loss at the head and foot and at the folds from shelf wear, as well. The jacket is now protected in a clear archival Brodart sleeve. Illustrator: Lynd Ward.
