Royal octavo (9 1/2" x 6 1/2") bound in original publisher's red cloth with gilt lettering to spine in pictorial jacket. First edition. During his historic circumnavigation of the globe almost four centuries ago, Francis Drake set sail across the Pacific in the Golden Hind from the coast of California coast and did not make landfall for several weeks later. His reception was such that he called the place the "Island of thieves." Ever since, the identity of the island has bee the subject of much speculation. William Lessa seeks to set the record straight, with the perspicacity of the scholarly investigator, he sifts through the information from the fields of ethnohistory, ethnology and anthropology.
