About This Item
New York; (1893): Tait Sons and Co. Limited Edition. Octavo. Limited to only 300 copies signed by Irving. 201p. The frontispiece of Irving is by Whistler. He was the first actor to be knighted and he was a close friend of Bram Stoker (who based Dracula on some of his characteristics). He was the first actor to take control of sets, lighting, direction, casting as well as playing leading roles. Included in this volume is his lecture to Oxford on four great actors includes generous appreciations of Garrick, Edmund Kean, Burridge and Betterton though in retrospect he may only have Garrick to whom he can be compared. Bound in white pictorial gilt cloth lettered and decorated in gilt, spine gilt, binding with finger soiling, internally clean and bright. A very good copy of a scarce item since Irving's signature usually is only found on letters that appear at auction.
