About This Item

London: William Carpenter, 1836. 7 3/4 x 5 inches, 16 pages, bound in whole brown calf by Sangorski & Sutcliffe: gilt edges, gold title lettering on a dark red leather label along spine, gilt border on front and back boards, gilt tooling along cover edges and turn-ins. Minor soiling to cover; small patch of board exposed at spine bottom and top; light rubbing along joints. Black and white frontispiece and six b/w satirical caricatures throughout, bindery stamp and bookseller stamp on front and back blanks respectively. Decorative slipcase matching endpaper: corners and edges worn. Printed by Vizetelly, Branston and Co.

An unusual comedic pamphlet designed "to submit to the public taste some characteristic samples of the Choice Spirits of the Age" and claiming to portray "a full-length Likeness of Society, in its habit as it lives". Consists of a Preface, a poetic Dedication, and six sections describing 'My Lord Mayor', 'My Lady Mayoress', 'The Sword-Bearer', 'The Chamberlain', 'The Alderman', and 'The Common-Councilman'.
