About This Item
Baton Rouge, Louisiana: Louisiana State University Press, 1982. Hardcover. FINE in Very Good Dustjacket. SHARP CORNERS. Dustjacket very good. Sunning to spine. Silver metallic lettering lightly debossed to spine of cadet-blue, cloth-covered boards. Six black and white illustrations. Five maps. Clean, bright, tight. 306 pp with appendix, bibliography and index. A complete analysis of the speeches and voting in the Virginia legislature during the dramatic 1831 -- 1832 slavery debate -- a debate fired by the violence of the Nat Turner insurrection. Drift Toward Dissolution shows the debate to have been not so much a moment of decision as a moment of indecision and compromise.
