About This Item
London; Folio Society, 2015., 2015. Hard Cover. FIRST EDITION, Number 920 of 1980 numbered copies. Octavo, pp. xiv, 702; "Commentary" [6], 150. Complete text, reconstructed and edited by Steven Amarnick, assisted by Robert F. Wiseman with Susan Lowell Humphreys. Frontispiece portrait of Trollope to "Commentary", from a photograph by Julia Margaret Cameron. Bound in green half-goatskin with 4 raised bands, gilt titles to maroon label to spine and gilt decoration to compartments, gilt fillets and green cloth-covered boards; top edge gilt; marbled endpapers by Jemma Lewis, and green silk place-marker. "Commentary" bound in matching green cloth with gilt titles to spine and upper board, printed endpapers showing facsimile of the opening and closing pages of the original manuscript, and green silk place-marker. Housed together in plain green paper-covered slipcase. Printed letter referring to initial purchase laid-in, and printed Line Counter bookmark. Complete with 8 page, softcover portfolio. Gilt top edge very slightly marked, otherwise a Fine pair of volumes in like slipcase. The Folio Society produced the first uniform edition of Trollope's novels in the 1980s and 1990s, before the entire text of "The Duke's Children" had ever been published. The opportunity to publish the very first edition of the novel in its entirety was offered by The Trollope Society to the Folio Society to mark Trollope's bicentenary in 2015, and the restored text is accompanied by a "Commentary" volume relating the full story of how the work had been cut then restored, with other helpful notes. The novel is lavishly bound in a Victorian style binding as it is effectively a Victorian First Edition, with an Introduction by the Author's descendant Joanna Trollope. Heavyweight so a contribution towards increased postage costs will be requested for overseas delivery.
