Du Bois (1888-1863), the noted African American sociologist and civil rights activist. First published in 1940, this edition appeared in 1980. A co-founder of he National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Du Bois later became disillusioned and left the organization. Illustrated with the work of Romare Bearden, selected by the artist. An entry in the publisher's 100 Greatest Masterpieces of American Literature series, issued in conjunction with the Bicentennial of the American Revolution. One of an unspecified number in this limited edition. --- Bound in full navy bonded leather covers with two raised bands on spine. Spine titling, elaborate decorations to covers and spine, and textblock edges (AEG) all in bright gilt. Interior leaves printed on high-quality papers. Blue silk moire endpapers, with matching sewn-in satin ribbon placemarker.
