About This Item
Los Angeles Herald Newspaper. February 8, 1915. One of the most innovative directors in the American film industry, this film known both as "Birth of a Nation" and "The Clansman" was the first 2 hour length movie. A Civil War epic soon criticized for its racial bias and glorification of the Ku Klux Klan. A spectacular inside page ad for the controversial film's opening is two columns wide and a full column long. Striking Headline "THE CLANSMAN - or - Birth Of A Nation...D.W. Griffith's Picture...Starting Today..." . Included in the same newspaper is an inside article on a separate page with bold headline surrounded by scrollwork reading, "LA Film Favorites In The Clansman...Practically Every Dollar Spent on Wonderful Picture Stays In This City". Column wide photos of a battle scene from the film. In very good condition.

For over 30 years, we have served a clientele of collectors, private institutions, universities, and public libraries in acquisition and collection development. We are members of ILAB, ABAA, and PADA, and have furnished collections around the world with rare and unique material; from the personal letters of literary greats to first edition Journals of Congress to unique pamphlets from the civil rights era. We strive to find archives and original early printed material that can fill gaps in existing institutional holdings; the kind of material that can bring new perspectives to the traditionally disregarded voices of indigiouneous peoples, women, and African-Americans.

The partnerships we form with libraries, institutions, and personal collectors begin with a phone call or an email and last for decades.
