About This Item

*The Dybbuk, Rich hardcover book in good condition oh, there is somewhere and it said just pictures provided for your review the dust jacket does have some tears on its covers, wonderfully Illustrated beautifully printed, rich copy.....The idea came during his Jewish folklore exhibition- cut short by the outbreak of World War I. The Dybbuk reflects Ansky's deep perception of the shtetl's religious & cultural mores, as well and insightful appreciation of its hidden spiritual resources. Plans to produce the play in Russian by Stanislavsky's Moscow Art Theater in 1920 - aborted by the Bolshevik Revolution. Ansky, who died in 1920 never lived to see his play produced. Play however, was destined to become one of the most widely-produced in the history of Jewish theater. Rich ethnographic tapestry, mystical themes, star-crossed lovers, haunting melodies were designed to bridge the historical abyss.Boundaries separating the natural from the supernatural dissolve as ill-fated pledges, - Polish Jewry on the eve of World War II....From Preface: Shloyme Zanvl Rappoport, known throughout the literary world under the pseudonym of S. Ansky, was born in Vitebsk, Russia, in 1863. Leading a life of wandering, roaming, cities, villages of Russia, collecting folktales, writing tragic history of his people. The Dybbuk, which is a product of these travels, the only complete dramatic piece he ever wrote. Play was written before the outbreak of the First World War; its first performance had to wait, however, until 1920.....
