About This Item
London: Routledge & Kegan Paul, 1979 0710003404. Hardback. First edition. First impresssion. VG/Fine. No inscriptions (except for previous owner's name neatly inscribed on front end page) and no annotations. DW is mylar-protected and is not price-clipped so condition is like new. Book itself has had some kind of label removed from front end page which has left a mark, but there is no indication that this has been a library book. Otherwise excellent condition. 304 pages. Definitive to date, this is the well researched biography of one of England's best loved poets, illuminating his creative, his professional and his sometimes troubled personal life. A.E. Housman, romantic poet and classical scholar, is best-known as the author of "A Shropshire Lad" and the meticulous editor of Manilius, the Latin poet of astronomy. In this first full biography, Richard Perceval Graves convincingly reconciles the two apparently conflicting sides of Housman's personality, and reassesses the reputation of a man who was something of a mystery even to his closest friends. 'This is bound to become the standard life' - John Carey, "Sunday Times". 'Dispassionate and well-researched' - Philip Larkin, "Guardian". .
