1905. Limited Edition. Soft cover. Good+. Limited to 100 colies, this being #54., (ca. 1905). A Good+ copy. 8vo, unpaginated, illustrated with colored drawings. Bound in string-tied linen paper, with title on hand-colored paper label. Each page illustrated with an illuminated letter, in green, red, gilt and brown. Soiling to the wraps. Some light foxing, mainly to the end papers. William Herbert Carruth (1859-1924), received his A.B. in 1880 and his A.M. in 1889, both from Kansas University. In 1893 he received his Ph.D. from Harvard. He joined the faculty of KU in 1879, teaching German and English. In 1902 he became the Vice-President of the Faculty and reached full Professor status. He retired in 1913 and died in 1924. The poem is unique in its construction and the way that readers can interpret two very different meanings. Depending on how one reads this poem, one could walk away from it, feeling as though the poet was speaking for or against the existence of God.
