In the telling of the story there is conveyed with startling immediacy the dramatic moments of Mexican history: the ordeal of Moctezuma, the Noche Triste of Cortes, the miracle of the Virgin of Guadaluope, Hidalgo's Revolt, the Alamo, the decisive battle of San Jaciento, the Bear Flag Revolt, and finally the defeat of Santa Anna and American occupation of Mexico City in 1847 which so closely parallels the seizure of the capital by Cortes and his men three centuries before.
