Limited edition of 500 copies. . 150 pps. Covers the period 1845-1850. One of the first hostellers in San Francisco, the author knew everyone and their doings in the city. "Brown operated the Portsmouth House in 1846 and the City Hotel at various times between 1847 and 1850. his text gives wonderful detail on people and events as well as the operation of a Gold Rush hotel" (Kurutz).
