About This Item

1962. Early days in Webster County, IA, are recalled through colorful tales and factual data in this brand new 63-page booklet, an reprint of the hard-to-find 1962 book The Early History of Early Fort Dodge and Webster County Iowa, based on the writings of Major William Williams, founder of Fort Dodge, plus an excerpt from the rare 1938 WPA book, Iowa, a Guide to the Hawkeye State. This 11" x 8.5" spiral bound booklet, titled Webster County, Iowa, USA, is one of some 750 booklets we have reproduced, all preserving the writings of early historians. We've printed it on 60# paper with the 3-color front cover protected with a vinyl sheet. Some of the subjects are: the building of Fort Dodge and army life; organization of Webster county and re-divisioning of counties; Homer, the first county seat, and the fight to make Fort dodge county seat; the murder of an Indian chief; the Spirit Lake Massacre; railroads, court house, business men, lawyers, doctors, etc.; the fight at Springfield; Mrs. Marble's story of her captivity by Indians; names of the volunteers who went to the aid of the settlers; and many other bits of history and trivia. Illustrations include: a photo of Major Williams and a drawing of Sioux Indians. The WPA excerpt includes a special section of Fort Dodge, including how the famous Cardiff Giant hoax led to the development of the gypsum quaries, and 10 points of interest. Other stops include Dolliver Memorial Park, Lehigh, Harcourt, Duncombe, and Moorland. These WPA books, while perhaps out-of-date as travel guides, are filled with interesting bits of history and trivia. . Limited Edition Reprint. Spiral/Comb . New/No Jacket. 11" x 8.5".
