Photographed by the most famous and outstanding foreign photographer of the period, Raimund Von Stillfried. . * With 15 large color photo examples of portraits, posed photos of ten Japanese women including one of a young woman with breast exposed, 3 of Japanese men, of the 8 smaller black and white photos, 6 of women, and a pair of Samurai-warriors, rickshaw coolies & women, palanquin & a woman. . Other large color photos show shrines or temples in Nagasaki, Asakusa, gardens in Kyoto and Uyeno, Ainu, Mt. Fuji, Hakone and rural scenes. . *** All images are sharp, with lovely, tasteful hand-coloring mostly pastels and well done. . * The first photo of a tattooed Japanese "Beto" is a bit damp stained in the margin and is illustrated in Fabian, on p.117 c.1800. . * Some very stunning portraits of Japanese women superbly composed and executed, a classic and wonderful work. . * Stillfried had one of the best eyes of any photographer to ever work in Japan. His compositions and candid photographs captured the true inner sense of an early and innocent Japan.
