Title page illustrated with maps. "Palapala'aina is the title of a projected series of books about the mapping of Hawai'i. This first volume, The Early Mapping of Hawai'i, covers the initial phase of mapmaking in the islands... The Early Mapping if Hawai'i is an overview of the history of the mapping of Hawai'i from the time of European discovery in 1778 through the mid-19th century. Mapmaking was not an art indigenous to Hawai'i; foreigners were responsible for the introduction of mapmaking in the islands. For well over seventy years, mapping in Hawai'i was largely carried out by Europeans or Americans, and the early maps of Hawai'i were mostly made to serve the needs of those foreigners." (Preface). Profusely illustrated with early color and b/w maps of Hawai'i, b/w photographs and drawings throughout. Contains notes, citations of illustrations, bibliography and index at rear. Minor wear along edges of dustjacket with foxing on top and foredge of block, small smudge at foredge of page 155.
