About This Item

Istanbul: Artin Asaduryan ve Mahdumlari Matbaasi., [AH 1327], 1911. 2nd Edition . Leather. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Contemporary brown quarter morocco, five raised bands gilt to spine, red & crescent motives on the front and rear boards; slightly faded and chipped on extremities of boards, some foxing on pages, overall a good copy. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). [9], 296 p., 160 numerous reproduced woodcuts. Exceedingly rare early (second) edition of this richly illustrated zoology book written by El-Husrî when he was the director of Darülfünûn (University of Istanbul), a constitutional period educator, one of the early followers of Darwin's theory of evolution in Turkey. The book is a compilation made by the author from the lecture notes of the period he taught at Yanya School in Crete for four years. Al-Husri mostly used the works of French zoologists such as Jean Octave Edmond Perrier (1844-1921), Paul Constantine, Matias Duvel, and Innen Rabu as a source in the formation of the book. El-Husrî displayed an oppositional stance against the Ottoman educator Emrullah Efendi's Tuba Tree Theory, which advocated that reforms in education should be started from higher education. He is the person who developed the ideology of Arab nationalism after World War I, and with this feature, he is a name that has been influential in the 20th-century Arab world. He was born in Yemen and died in Baghdad. El-Husrî was instrumental in establishing a scientific education approach based on Western pedagogy in Turkey during his teaching years at Darülmuallimîn (The School of Male Teachers). His efforts in educating teachers were appreciated by all Turkish intellectuals of the period and he was nicknamed "Türk Fröbeli" [i.e. Turkish Fröbel] after German pedagogue Friedrich Fröbel (1782-1852) who revolutionized pedagogy. Özege 19920.; Only one copy in OCLC in Turkey (Koç University): 1030062462, not in the libraries worldwide.
