Extremely scarce and out-of-print FIRST EDITION! "In ethnological treatment of the northeastern Algonkian groups, numerous gaps exist in the plotting of occurrence and distribution of culture traits. This condition is notably true of the region east of the Alleghenies. Many reasons may be cited for these lacunae, not all of which pertain to the loss of native culture through extinction of the natives themselves or through their acquiring 'civilized habits' in the course of cross-breeding with alien strains. It is largely through neglect in exploiting the latent possibilities for reclaiming ethnological information among groups so reduced in number and tribal spirit as to thought scientifically insignificant......." ---- from the Introduction.
