EASTERN ISLANDS OR MALAY ARCHIPELAGO. A STEEL ENGRAVED MAP.

London 1836, Baldwin & Gradock. Single sheet map, on stiff paper, 41 x 34.5 cm. overall, map size ca. 40 x 32 cm., old original hand-color here and there, English key, steel engr- aved, very good, slight toning, one mend on back else clean. A lovely period map. It shows from about 15 degrees North to ca 11 degrees South, and 95 degrees West to 135 East. This includes a part of Burma at the upper left, Siam, Laos, Cochin China, Camboja [sic], the Malayan Peninsula, Malacca Strait, Borneo, Sumatra, Java, Sumbawa, Floris, New Guinea, Molucca Islands, Celebes, Philippines, Archipelago Filipino including most of the islands, half of Hainan at the top, Paracel Rocks, Macclesfield Bank, Malacca, Singapore, Pinang, Timor Laut, Indian Ocean, China Sea, and that area. * There are also commentaries and notes such as: "Borneo produces gold, tin, diamonds, camphor, spices &c. Interior unknown but inhabited by aboriginal Dayaks, and the coasts by Malays & Chinese. Borneo is 3 times larger than Great Britain & divided into several independent states,. Probable population 3,000,000. Other such notes on Batavia, Sumatra, Molucca Isles, New Guinea et al. . * The map shows major mountains and mountain chains, rivers, islands, lakes, and where important, the names of cities, towns, states, countries, with color outline, special trading places of importance to the British or "English Settlements" were in red such as Malacca, Poulo P'inang, Singapore and near Sambass a Chinese gold colony on West Borneo. Geographical features such as mountains are carefully drawn in as are a large number of smaller rivers along the coast line. * CONDITION: The map is in nice condition, with a minor amount of toning to the exterior margins, but the map itself is clean and very suitable for framing and display. The old color is in pastel tones, done in yellow, purple, green and pink. All in all a very good map. Below the title is the key with translations into native languages, height of mountains in yards.
