About This Item
Macmillan: New York, 1915. First edition.
Signed "with the cordial regards of" Beard and dated January 12, 1921.
Beard was one of the intellectual leaders of the Progressive movement and of American liberalism. This work, a sequel to Beard's magnum opus An Economic Interpretation of the Constitution, focuses on the nation's early political history from the adoption of the Constitution through the end of the Jefferson administration. In it, Beard places somewhat more emphasis on the philosophical context of political struggles, but he nevertheless reaffirmed his view of the importance of economic interests in governmental action.
A good copy, spine tips and corners rubbed, rear board a little marked, front and rear hinge started. Still a scarce first, especially signed.
