A collector from his student days, he became an eminent connoisseur and collector of American Neoclassical furniture, especially of his favorite Federal period. A Fellow for Life of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, he designed and helped execute and furnish six period room settings for the museum's centennial 19th-Century America show in 1970. He was an accomplished photographer, a lecturer, a preservationist, and a craftsman who trained an eclectic and unique crew of experts to aid in the execution of his design. With 251 illustrations: color photographs, archival photographs, sketches, drawings, and floor plans.
